E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition Congratulations to this year's E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year’s 1st Place winner Mykia Woodard! Mykia is a graduating senior at Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s John Marshall High School. Her idea, "Save A Life," proposes to sell straws that change color when in contact with a narcotic-laced beverage. This year’s grand prize winner, Mykia received $1,000 from Y.O.U. to help fund her business idea, a trip to New York City to participate in the National NFTE Competition, and the title of E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year. In addition, she will be recognized at Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Gala in spring. Other finalist products included comfortable women’s clothing, one-of-a-kind charms with a positive message, purse organizers, soft hair bands, and cruelty-free card holders. E CITY YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR COMPETITION Wednesday, May 16, 2018, Ernst & Young 950 Main Ave, Cleveland, OH 44113 4:30pm - Doors Open | 5:00pm - Program | 6:00pm - Networking Reception *All guests must RSVP for security purposes* E CITY (Entrepreneurship: Connecting, Inspiring & Teaching Youth) teaches youth business, financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills. The primary goal of E CITY is to teach teens how to develop a business plan and also connect youth to employment. E CITY is structured on the belief that many teens have mental toughness, street smarts, survival instincts, and creativity – qualities that are key traits of successful entrepreneurship and that, if shown how, teens can build on these traits to achieve success in the business world. Each participant receives a business investment stipend to start their business. During the course, business volunteers work as one-on-one coaches with the teens. Top students from each school will compete at the E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition at the Ernst & Young building on May 16th, 2018. Pablo Arredondo Named 2017 E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Pablo Arredondo, CEO of Whisker Wear, was named the 2017 Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Whisker Wear is a slip-on dog or cat collar cover with a snap-on bow tie or flower accessory. Arredondo, a sophomore at Thomas W. Harvey High School, will now prepare to present his business in New York City at the NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) National Competition. Other top finishers included Christian Padierna with CP’s Chimichurri, Christina Johnson with Visa-Cap, DeVaughn Dixon with Shirzy, and Cory Washington with Cory Nice Kicks. The announcement was at the E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition made on May 18. In all, 16 businesses were presented to a panel of judges and Whisker Wear came out on top. The two fourth place finishers were awarded $100 to fund their business venture, third place received $250, and the second place finisher was awarded $500. Arredondo, the first place finisher, won a total of $2,000, a trip to New York City for the national competition, and will be recognized at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Gala in spring. As the academic year begins to wind down, the E CITY students are preparing their pitches for the E CITY Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition. The preliminary round, in classrooms around Northeast Ohio begins in April, when entrepreneurs contend for their school’s top spot, and ultimately, the chance to move on to the final NEO-based round of competition.
